Gym expanded at the ‘expense’ of ‘unique’ swimming pool

A local council member criticized Wirral Council’s decision to expand Birkenhead’s gym at the expense of a “unique” swimming pool.

The Europa Pools fun pool has been closed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This summer, council officials reversed a move by councilors to temporarily reopen during school holidays, saying the high number of Covid-19 cases at the time meant it was not safe for public health reasons.

Now, the board has chosen to expand the gym in Europe by constructing a new facility on the ground floor in the fun pool.

Cllr Stuart Kelly, a Liberal Democrat, set a decision last summer and wasn’t happy with the gym plan either.

The Oxton City Council member thought the gym expansion was “not necessary”, especially since it was positioned in a “unique” town swimming pool, complete with wave and slide machine.

“There are a lot of gyms around the Wirral, but there was only one pool for kids, and the fun pool was profitable during holiday periods, I hope the pool will be renovated for school holidays next summer,” he added.

The new gym is scheduled to open tomorrow, with the upstairs fitness suite being used for a variety of exercise classes when the center is secure to accommodate larger groups.

Helen Cameron, Member of the Board of Governors and Chair of the Tourism and Leisure Committee said: “This is a truly fantastic use of space in Europa.

“While it is disappointing that we were not able to reopen the leisure pool at enough capacity to be financially viable, adapting the area to accommodate much-needed additional gym equipment is a really innovative idea thanks to the staff who suggested it – and for making that happen Very quickly “.

The improved gym will house more than 60 pieces of equipment, including some new equipment not previously available on Europa, such as a roller skating track.

Europa’s popular café is also set to reopen next week, and swimming facilities will remain open at the competition pool for swim sessions for adults and families.
