Columbus, Georgia (WTVM) – The former professional boxer, who has owned a gym in Columbus Georgia for the past seven years, showed me the ropes, in and out of the ring, on the latest episode of his “Run The Race” podcast, giving some tips on what you can Do, in terms of exercise and food, after Thanksgiving.
Daryl Wright, owner of Wright Way Fitness, has shared his journey from track star to military to boxing and is now a personal trainer.
“I’ve been a 4-time Georgia Golden Glove champion and that’s what people see, but they don’t understand the history behind it. I did a terrible thing, I just came out of the cold in 2003,” Wright said.
After 74 amateur bouts, he became a professional boxer, but he explains why she was one and ended up in professional fights. He says there are a lot of life lessons that come from boxing – like falling and going back! His motto is: Think, Speak, Do It, whether you want to. This can be positive or negative.
Wright loves sports and fitness, but tells us that he is more passionate about helping others. Opening his gym was a “leap of faith,” and just this year, they now have a separate boxing gym with a ring on it.
He talked on the podcast about what it means to train like a boxer, which doesn’t have to include punching, but does include a basic full-body workout. Wright has boxing clients as young as 7 years and 70 years old. This includes his two children, ages 9 and 10.
“I want them (my children) to learn, early on, how to take punches, to get up, to slide, to move, to knit, and they should be avoided, because, as we know, life comes with its punches,” Wright said.
And this personal trainer says it’s not just about losing weight, it’s about being a better you! Wright doesn’t go on a diet and wants people to enjoy eating, but he does talk about moderation and motivating fitness this holiday season.
“Go get the Thanksgiving turkey, all the sauce, get it, but still exercise at the same time. If you’re using it or losing it,” Wright added.
