Bodybuilder Melissa Bumstead Arrested for Possession of Controlled Substances

The International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) Pro League competitor Melissa Baumstead has been arrested in Palm, Florida. According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Bumstead was arrested and taken into custody on September 11, 2021; She was released the same day. Bumstead is accused of illegally receiving six different steroids by mail in Martin County, located in southeast Florida (north of Fort Lauderdale).

Bumstead faces six counts* of possessing a controlled substance without a valid prescription For the following six steroids:

  • Testosterone Propionate – anabolic steroid
  • Drostanolone Propionate – Androgen and anabolic steroid
  • Trenbolone Acetate – Androgen and anabolic steroid
  • Oxandrolone – anabolic steroid
  • mesterolone – Androgen and anabolic steroid
  • stanozolol – Androgen and anabolic steroid

* To clarify these allegations. Baumstead has not been formally convicted of a crime.

As I mentioned CBS12On September 1, 2021, US Customs and Border Protection seized a parcel in Memphis that was said to contain “vitamins, massage oil, and a T-shirt.” The package was mailed from Canada. A search of that package showed that it contained “vials and multiple packets of stimulants and other medicines that were sealed and factory sealed”.

At the time of writing this article, it is not clear where the package was mailed in Canada or who mailed it.

The 30-year-old Baumstead’s arrest followed a “controlled delivery” of the package by Homeland Security Investigations and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. She received a search warrant for her home after confirming that she had opened the package.

Baumstead is the older sister of Mr. Olympia Classic Physics champ Chris Baumstead. She is married to bodybuilder Ian Valier. At the time this article was written, Chris, Melissa, and Valier have not made any public comments about the arrest.

Melissa Baumstead earned her professional IFBB card at the 2015 Canadian Federation of Canadian Bodybuilding (CBBF) Championships. She has competed in 11 IFBB competitions since 2016 – most recently placing 15th at the 2019 Arnold Sports Festival.

Bumstead is not scheduled to compete in the 2021 Arnold Classic on September 25, 2021, as it will only feature the Men’s Open, Fitness Classic, Fitness International and Bikini International.
